p-Toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (PTSA monohydrate, CAS: 6192-52-3) is the most widely used commercial crystalline form of p-toluenesulfonic acid. It has a molecular formula of CHOS and a molar mass of 190.22 g/mol, containing one stably bonded crystal water molecule. Compared with anhydrous PTSA, it exhibits lower deliquescence and better storage stability, making it the preferred form for laboratory and industrial applications.

PTSA monohydrate is a colorless or white crystalline powder with no odor. It dissolves readily in polar solvents such as water, ethanol and methanol, is slightly soluble in ether, and insoluble in non-polar solvents like benzene and alkanes. Featuring low volatility and stable room-temperature properties, it is easy to weigh, store and transport, overcoming the high moisture sensitivity of anhydrous PTSA.

It is a non-oxidizing strong organic acid with acidity similar to sulfuric acid. Different from inorganic strong acids, it rarely causes oxidation, carbonization or other side reactions.
